I bought this book earlier in the year when I had high hopes of sailing to Alaska in 2016. Sadly, it is looking like that is not going to happen (nothing like a cross country move and cancer diagnosis to get in the way of vacation plans!), so I have moved my high hopes to 2017. Out of all of the Alaska cruise books on Amazon (you can see the selection by clicking here), I decided on this particular book because of it’s great reviews and large fold-out map. I am a map nerd and I admit it.
Let me start by saying that this is not a traditional guide book with lists of restaurants and museums. Instead, it focuses on more of the history of the Alaska coast and includes a lot of exciting, informative first hand accounts from the author. Even so, it still provides a lot of helpful information about the cruise industry in Alaska and, with the addition of the map, would keep any cruiser very well informed of their surroundings while sightseeing from the ship. Ever wonder what that little building is off in the distance? If you are following your course on this map, you will probably know and can sound like the smartest guy in your group (if you want to). There are lots of great pictures that accompany the author’s stories and I think photographers would find this book especially helpful to anticipate what it coming up and be ready to capture the shot, whether it is scenery or wildlife. I would suggest reading this book in its entirety before your cruise – do not start it onboard or you will already be past a lot of the places by the time you read about them in the book. Still take the book (and definitely the map!) with you on the cruise to refer to daily, but make sure you have already completed it beforehand. I plan to buy at least one more Alaska cruise book soon (probably a more typical travel guide style book with lists of restaurants, stores, excursions, etc) but I am glad I started with this one and I know it will be a great resource once we finally do get an Alaskan cruise one of these days!
