We recently had a Harry Potter birthday party at our house for my daughter’s 10th birthday and I thought it turned out pretty cute. I know this post is not Disney-related, but we are getting ready for our trip to Universal Studios in a few weeks (along with a Disney cruise) so I have had a lot of Harry Potter on my mind lately. If you are not familiar with the books and movies, I highly recommend that you give them a shot. I only read them within this past year, mainly because my kids discovered them and fell in love, and I was curious what all of the fuss was about. And, I have to admit that I fell in love too. Even if it is not a genre you would usually read (it was not for me!), I still would encourage you to give them a try. They are awesome!
Okay, now onto the Harry Potter birthday party! I am going to be honest and tell you that none of these ideas were my own – I found every single one of them online. We put all of this stuff up the night before, after the birthday girl was in bed, so that it was a surprise to her when she woke up in the morning. I think this fireplace with the Hogwarts letters flying out of it ended up being my favorite.
We also had some golden snitches:
These dementors didn’t turn out quite as good as the ones I saw online, but they were good enough for a 10 year old:
We had floating candles just like the ones in the Great Hall:
We also had a line of spiders crawling through the house:
I put these posters of the birthday girl all over the house:
And we offered our guests free invisibility cloaks:
These were the drinks:
Of course we had to have a Platform 9 3/4:
I think this bathroom was my second favorite part, after the fireplace. We had Moaning Myrtle coming out of the toilet, writing in blood on the mirror and a petrified Mrs. Norris:
The cake wasn’t chocolate like Harry’s because the birthday girl requested lemon, but it was a pretty close replica:
The decorations were definitely a hit, but I think the biggest hit of the party was what was going on outside……..
We rented this water slide and it was SO much fun!!! It was a lot bigger than it looks in this picture. The adults even slid down it (including yours truly!) and we had a blast. Here is another picture that shows the size of it a little better:
It was a great day celebrating a great 10 year old! We can’t wait to visit Universal Studios next month and spend the day at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. To say my kids are excited would be an understatement! We will be doing a VIP tour and of course I will tell you all about it with a detailed trip report after we return.
