Guest Trip Report: April 21, 2022 5 Night Pacific Coast on the Disney Wonder
Day 2: At Sea
Our first full day on the ship was a sea day as we headed up the coast of California. We slept in a little that morning since we had no plans until our Palo brunch.
We did go up to the Concierge Lounge for some hot tea and coffee to start our day, though.
I spotted the Art of the Theme Show Tour on the schedule that morning and we decided to go see what it was all about. I had heard good things about this tour, but I’ve never made time to do it on previous cruises. It’s a 45-minute, adults-only tour of the ship detailing the design, art, and theme choices throughout. We loved it.
Our tour guide, Gus, was really engaging and knowledgeable. He did a great job of projecting his voice through his mask so that we could understand him.
Right after the tour ended in the atrium, we spotted Captain Minnie out meeting guests. Captain Minnie has been somewhat of a white whale for me since she made her debut on the ships. I hadn’t gotten a photo of or with her yet! So we went up to see her and get a photo – finally!
Then it was time for our Palo brunch. Despite the lack of the buffet, we still really enjoy the brunch. They give you a choice of seafood or a meat and cheese plate to start, which sort of takes the place of the buffet (but not really). Previously this year on the Magic, our waiter gladly combined the things we wanted from each of these plates, making a custom antipasti plate. However, this time on the Wonder, our waiter informed us that was not possible. I am guessing this is due to the rules of each restaurant’s individual manager. So, we got one plate of each this time!
In the bread basket, the onion focaccia is the BEST.
My mom ordered the Celery soup with Spiced Italian Sausage and Focaccia croutons. She said it was great.
We also tried a new (to us) flatbread – the goat cheese and sundried tomato – and we loved it.
We also shared my favorites, the Chicken Parmesan and the Artichoke Ravioli. Excellent, as always.
We ended our delicious brunch with two desserts – the very inventive presentation of Tiramisu and the Warm Amaretto Chocolate Fondant with Espresso Gelato (a MUST if you like chocolate).
With no set plans the rest of the day, we looked at the app for activities and found trivia in the D-Lounge a little while later that we wanted to do. We hung out in the concierge lounge and our room, reading and relaxing in the meantime.
Thor stopped by during the trivia and had a funny exchange with us and the trivia host. I love when the characters pop by and do that – it happened more than once on our last three cruises in the D-Lounge in particular because I think that hallway is how the characters get from their “rooms” to the atrium.
We went outside after trivia to get some fresh air – the weather was beautiful for our sea day, but as you can see from the photos, the outside decks were far from busy. In fact, we didn’t encounter crowds hardly anywhere on this entire cruise.
We found Goofy on deck, though!
Since we were so close, I popped into the Concierge lounge for my favorite afternoon treat – the Oreo pops.
And since we skipped lunch due to our Palo Brunch, we indulged in the afternoon tea in the lounge a couple of hours later too. I absolutely loved the powdered sugar and jam cookie with the Mickey head on top – it was delicious.
We spent most of the afternoon out on our verandah or just in our stateroom watching movies, reading, and lounging – a perfect way to spend a sea day!
That night we had dinner in Triton’s. I had the lobster and jumbo shrimp appetizer, the leak and potato soup, and the Chateaubriand filet. I either skipped dessert or forgot to take a photo of it! I am not a huge fan of the desserts in Triton’s, so I probably skipped it.
After dinner, we changed into more comfy (and warm) clothes and made our way to the Crown and Fin Pub to take a closer look at a few of the details pointed out to us on the Art of the Theme Show tour that morning.
For instance, you can see Mary Poppins’ umbrella high up on a shelf near the entrance as well as Archimedes’ bird house (the owl from Sword in the Stone).
These hats on the rack are all from Disney movies.
We were also supposed to meet our Concierge hosts in this lounge before the show that evening to take advantage of the new offering – entering the Walt Disney Theatre a bit early to get our desired seats. They also had fresh popcorn there for us to take. The show that night was The Golden Mickeys.
And even later that night, we went out on the pool deck (actually, right above it) for the fireworks show. It was pretty windy and cold at that time.
Everyone was crowded around the side of the ship where they send off the fireworks, but in my opinion, you get a much better view (and better photos) when you stand on the other side. This way you can see the ship as a reference point – fireworks at sea are special!
After the brief fireworks show, we were cold and ready to head to bed! Our towel animal that night was a rhino, I think.
Our next day would start very early – heading into San Francisco bay!
