I recently mentioned on my Facebook page that Disney Cruise Line is phasing out plastic straws and lids on their ships. I got so many responses and so much feedback that I thought I should make a post about it so that hopefully everyone is informed before their cruise.
Over the last several months, DCL has begun eliminating plastic straws and lids from the self-serve drink station, bars, and main dining rooms. While this is great for the environment, it can make things tricky for parents of young children, and can be disappointing to people of all ages who enjoy using straws but don’t care for the paper ones that are now being provided.
If you fall into any of these categories, consider bringing along your own reusable sippy cups, lids, and/or straws. Here are some options that I have compiled from both personal experience and reader feedback:
Silikids Universal Silicone Straw Lids, BPA-Free Cup Covers for Kids
These handy cup covers would keep you from having to transfer the beverage to another container. Click here to see them on Amazon.

Healthy Sprouts Silicone Sippy Lids
If you prefer a sippy cup top over a straw, then check out these universal drinking lids (click here to see on Amazon):

Stainless Steel Reusable Straws
For those that do not care for paper straws (I find they get soggy quickly), consider bringing along reusable straws. This stainless steel set comes with a cleaning brush, and is available in several different sizes & colors (click here to see them all).
For those who think that stainless steel is too cold on the lips, check out these:
Reusable Silicone Drinking Straws
This reusable silicone set comes in several different shapes and sizes. Click here to see all of the options.
These are just a few ideas, and there are even more options out there if you want to look for more. I prefer using straws most of the time, so I’ll be bringing along my stainless steel set the next time we set sail.

Ever since I was a kid I never really liked straws that much. I only find it useful when in a car (never know when a bump might spill your drink all over you when taking a sip) or when I’m walking. I mean we don’t use straws for alcoholic drinks or hot drinks like coffee and hot coco so why do we have the mentality that cold drinks need to be drunk with a straw?
Last year I started my straw ban and drinking stuff has been easier since I’m drinking straight from the cup instead of wasting paper and plastic with a straw, though it’s annoying when a restaurant includes one with the utensils and the straw is a bent mess.
My mom though is one of those that can’t conceive of drinking anything without a straw.

This was a big deal for me on our last cruise. I really like having a lid and straw. It so hard to carry back multiple cups of liquid without a lid. I understand why they do it and I’m all for saving the environment but it is an adjustment. I’m going to have to buy some of those reusable straws and carry them in my purse.

Does this include the kids drinks at the restaurants? I always loved being able to order a kids drink without having to bring a sippy/camelbak…wondering if I need to plan for meal drinks now too…

Yes, this includes the kids drinks in the main dining rooms. They will give you a paper straw but no lids.

Are you allowed to bring your own disposable plastic straws?
Disney Cruise Mom says
Yes, you can.
