In case you missed it, I just started a new guest trip report. Deann recently sailed on the July 9, 2018 9 night Alaska itinerary and was kind enough to share her adventures with us. You can start this trip report from the beginning right here.
Day : 6 – Hubbard Glacier
Saturday, July 14
The daily navigator had listed a high of 56 and cloudy. It should have said misty/rain with wind and feels like 40. Ah Alaska! Still, it’s better than standing in front of your freezer with the door open on a 100+ day in Texas. We dressed for the event: silks both on body and feet, long sleeved t-shirt, long sleeved fleece shirt, blue jeans, rain paints, rain resistant coat, stocking cap and gloves, hood up on coat with rain hat, ready to meet the elements. We were out on deck from about 8:30 AM until we turned and left the glacier. Boy did we take in some sights! Majestic mountains and rock formations with waterfalls, blue ice floating in the water and mist over the mountains. There were servers on hand with trays of hot chocolate, coffee and later split pea soup in bread bowls – yum! Notice the glacier calving at the 10 story high Hubbard Glacier in the center of this picture:
The ship moved to be parallel with glacier, allowing us a good look. We saw a couple of small calving events, then one massive piece just cracked loose and slid straight down into the water while we were parked in front of the glacier. The ship then turned so that the other side of ship could get a good a view, then turned some more so the aft decks got a good look before heading back out. All in all, it was about 20 minutes per side.
We had been out on deck for about 3 hours, so as we turned to head out of the fjord we hurried up to Cabanas on deck 9 to get a picture from the covered deck. It wasn’t open for lunch yet but they were allowing people to sit inside and on the aft deck due to the weather. There were heaters under the deck cover to help with the chill. Deck 10 was too crowded. We had hoped to get a good look off the back of the aft deck but there were too many people. So, we found a table near the inside corner and could see pretty well, so we camped out there. We started to peel off layers and dry out as we began to sail away from the glacier. We stayed at our great vantage point in Cabanas through lunch and after as it started to rain again and we had to warm up. As lunch ended, deck 10 aft was less crowded so we went there to take a look. No pictures can really do this view justice. It is something you must experience first hand.
After we got out into the open ocean again, we decided to change clothes and attend the matinee show “Disney & The Boys with Will and Anthony Nunziata”. It was a great show about the music of the Sherman brothers. The singers were twins and at one point during the show, they asked if there were any twins out there. My twin sister yelled “right here”, and they asked if both of us were there. We shouted “yes” and what do you know, they said “well come on down to the stage!”. As we started down from near the top of the theater they said “we’ll meet you half way” so we stopped and they took a picture of all four of us (I don’t have it yet – sorry!). We talked a bit, comparing twin notes and then went back to our seats to enjoy the rest of the show.
Afterwards, we took a few pictures with Chip & Dale and the other characters and then went to dinner. Then came the evening show: “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular”. It was wonderful. I loved the reindeer puppet. There’s nothing like a Disney Broadway-style show. Then, it was off to meet our towel animal, a bunny (with chocolates of course!).
Note: “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” was scheduled to be shown the following night as well, but between the two dinner times at 7:15. To me that is an odd time. I would rather have a matinee show. Sea days and glacier days are great for showing the big shows a second time in the afternoon. When a 1:00 matinee was held for “Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic” on Endicott Arm day, it was well attended. Just a suggestion Disney, if you’re reading this.
