Day 4, Part 2: St. John, NB, Canada
When I left off in part one, we had just climbed up the steep path from Melvin Beach. Alex gave us directions to walk to a waterfall called Fuller Falls (it was a flat path thank goodness) and he left us to go get the car and move it closer to the falls. The path to the falls was really pretty.
When we got to the falls, we had to walk down a steep ladder-type thing to get to the viewing platform.
The falls were really pretty!
If you look in the background of the photo below, you can see Melvin Beach, where we had just been:
Now for the climb back up – we were getting some great exercise today!
On the walk back to the car, we passed another pretty viewing area of the beach below:
Next we stopped at a lookout for Pangburn Beach. We were making our way northeast along the coast, up the Fundy Trail Parkway.
Next we came to the Big Salmon River Interpretive Center and Suspension Footbridge. The Interpretive Center was a small building with a short movie about the area and a gift shop. We bought a few souvenirs and then walked over to the suspension bridge.
The bridge crosses the Big Salmon River, which Alex told us has no salmon in it.
Across the bridge, we stopped for a few minutes on the bank of the river to enjoy the scenery. The water in the river was so clear that you could see straight to the bottom, even where it was about 10 feet deep. Alex said it was a popular swimming spot in the summer, even though the water temperature only gets up to the 60s!
We had almost reached the end of the Fundy Trail Parkway. For our final stop before turning around and driving back towards St. John, we went to Long Beach.
It was much easier to get to than Melvin beach, and much easier to walk on.
By now it was about 2:00 and we were starving, so we began driving back towards St. Martins to eat lunch. When we got there, the tide was much, much higher than when we had been there earlier. I failed to take any good pictures, but in this view from our table at the Caves Restaurant, you can see that the sea caves area in the background, which had been dry and covered with tourists earlier, was now underwater.
For reference, here is a picture from earlier in the day (taken in the opposite direction) where you can see the Caves Restaurant pictured above. It is the white building with the brown roof. Quite a difference!
Alex recommended the seafood chowder, which my husband and I tried and it was fantastic. The girls got burgers. After lunch, it was time to go back to the Quaco Lighthouse to see just how much the tide had risen. This is the before picture from earlier in the morning:
And now:
It was really neat to see the drastic difference of the tides.
By now it was about 4:00, and we had about a 45 minute drive back to St. John so we headed back (all aboard was 5:45). Before getting back to the ship, we made another stop at the Reversing Falls. Sure enough, the river was flowing in the opposite direction from that morning as the tide was now lowering and the water was flowing back out towards the ocean. That paper mill really is an eyesore!
Alex dropped us off right at the ship at about 4:45. We were tired from such a long day but we saw and did so much in those 8 hours that it was definitely worth it!
We re-boarded the Magic on deck 4, which I don’t ever remember doing before at any other port (we had disembarked that morning on deck 1).
The metal detectors and x-ray machines were set up on the exterior part of deck 4.
In this photo, I think that tunnel down below with the blue roof is the walkway where we had disembarked that morning:
We went straight back to the rooms where we found our tip envelopes waiting for us. This time, it really did mean the end of our cruise.
We were all pretty tired so we spent the next couple of hours resting in the rooms. At one point, one of the girls and I did walk around the ship to get some pictures of St. John from the ship.
These 2 people had the pools all to themselves:
We watched as we sailed away:
We decided to skip the evening show tonight (JunNk) because we had seen them on the previous cruise. At 7:30, my husband and I went to 90’s music trivia in O’Gill’s Pub. This was really fun as it is probably the decade whose music we are most familiar with. Once again, it was super crowded.
At 8:15, we met the girls at Rapunzel’s Royal Table for dinner. Tonight we had the pirate menu, and I was glad because we had not had the pirate menu on the sailing to Bermuda right before this (even though they did have pirate night) so I was finally able to get our hat photo which is a tradition for us.
The Deep Fried Calypso Crab Cake (good):
Angelica’s Lime-Marinated Shrimp (good):
The Vegetable Samosa (excellent, if you like cumin):
We either didn’t order entrees or I forgot to photograph them. We decided to skip dessert tonight because we were planning on going to the Pirate Buffet later. But, Leo would not let us leave without dessert so he brought us the 2 most popular choices and insisted that we take them with us.
The Caramel Macadamia Nut Cheesecake:
And the Bananas in Paradise:
I’m pretty sure these were both gone by the end of the night.
We went back to the room for a minute to drop off the desserts. We decided to skip the Pirates in the Caribbean deck party because the weather was not great (it was very cold and I think it was even a bit rainy) and we had gone to it on the previous cruise. We did, however, plan to do something that we had never done before – the Pirate Buffet in Cabanas at 10:30. I’m not sure what we did until 10:30, but I know that we walked around a little bit from the pictures I took.
When we walked through Shutters, I took a photo of the picture prices:
At 10:30, we went to Cabanas for the Pirate Buffet. We got there right when it opened (they only open one side of the restaurant for this) so it was not crowded at all and I was able to get some good pictures of the decor, which is definitely the most impressive part.
Most of the food was pretty basic and stuff that you could find at the lunch buffet throughout the cruise, except for the turkey legs:
And the crepe station:
The buffet is not a must-do, but it was nice to finally see what it was all about and best suited for those with early dining.
After a super long but fun day, it was off to bed to get rested for the final day of our back-to-back cruises.
