Day 7: At Sea

Once again, I totally dropped the ball on taking pictures this sea day. That seems to be a recurring theme on this cruise. I’m going to try my hardest to remember to take more pictures on sea days in the future.
We really didn’t do much on this day other than take it easy and enjoy our last day on the Wonder. The last 3 port days had been jam packed, and we were ready to relax. I woke up about 9:00 and the ship was really, really rocking. FYI, we ended up having rough seas on the first and last days of this cruise. Not sure if that is typically how it is on all Alaska sailings, but that’s what we experienced. I went out on the verandah to see that it was rainy and windy.
I wanted to do some laundry before the laundry room got crowded, and I was afraid I may already be too late. I went to the nearest laundry room and amazingly, it was almost deserted. I included details about how the self-serve laundry rooms work (including photos) in another day of this trip report, which you can read here, so I won’t repeat it. When I went back to put my clothes in the dryer, and then again to pick them up, I saw the laundry room had gotten very busy very quickly. So, get up early if you don’t want to have to wait for a washer or dryer.
Nobody was feeling up to going to Cabanas for breakfast, so I went up there to get a plate of pastries for us all to share, and some coffee for me. I also turned in the girls’ Oceaneer Club/Lab wristbands on the way, which once again they never used.
I made the girls get up at 10:30 and shower. My husband and I went to movie tunes trivia in the Crown & Fin Pub at 11:30. So far, we had only done the family trivia sessions, and this was our first adult trivia session. Well, I don’t think it was officially limited to adults because kids are allowed in there during the day, but this session only had adults participating. This was really fun, and made us think of movies that we hadn’t thought about in forever, but instantly recognized the music from. During trivia, the captain came on the speaker and announced that while the seas were very rough at the moment, they should be getting better in a few hours.
At 12:15, there was a Main Stage Q & A in the Crown & Fin Pub, where several of the main stage performers were available to tell us a little bit about what they do and answer questions from the audience. Our 11 year old does musical theater and is fascinated by the main stage performers, so she joined us. Kenny and Bunny were also there. It was an interesting session and we learned a lot about how they do the casting, how they do rehearsals, and such. At one point, one of the performers made a non-verbal reaction to a question about the Golden Mickeys that made me think that they may be getting ready to retire the show (it has been on the Wonder since 2003). This is PURE SPECULATION on my part and they did not actually say anything about this, it was just me trying to interpret body language. So, I could be way off base, but if it happens, you heard it here first!
Unfortunately, midway through the presentation, our daughter said her stomach was hurting. She has never been seasick before so I was pretty sure she was fine, but I didn’t want to risk it so I took her back to the room and gave her Dramamine. I thought it might be because she was hungry, so I went up to deck 9 to get her some pizza. At this same time, our oldest went to Cabanas by herself to get a plate to bring back to the room. The girls were basically having a lazy day in the room, although they did switch back and forth between the 2 rooms so that Holesman could clean them. She started feeling much better after she ate some pizza, and stayed in bed watching a movie.
At 1:00, my husband and I went to Cabanas for lunch by ourselves. The weather was still dreary:
We must have spent some time in the portholes on deck 4 because I took this pictures of my Minnie leggings. I think I mentioned this before, but the girls and I brought lots of LuLaRoe Disney leggings on the cruise and wore them pretty much the whole time we were on the ship (we wore jeans when we got off at the ports). They are the perfect cruise pants for Alaska. I’m also wearing my Skechers GoWalks, which are insanely comfortable. In addition to my GoWalks, I brought my Tieks (pricey, but also insanely comfortable) to wear onboard, and these waterproof Ugg boots to wear in the ports. I’ll go into more detail about what we packed in a separate post once I finish this trip report.
At 2:45, I took our 11 year old to the talent show rehearsals in the D Lounge. Most sailings 7 nights or longer have a family talent show on the last evening of the cruise. You sign up for it at the Port Adventures Desk. After that, I went back to the room for several hours to pack. We had bought more souvenirs on this cruise than any cruise prior (you can read my post about our souvenir haul here), and it took quite a while to get it all organized. Also, the older 2 girls had been staying by themselves in the room across the hall, so I had not been around to keep their stuff tidy and thus it looked like a clothing bomb had gone off. With their help, we got everything organized.
Next, I went to Shutters to make my final photo choices and place my order. I ended up buying 2 prints, and they would be ready later that night. I think it was during this time that I stepped outside onto deck 4 to take these photos. The skies were starting to clear.
Our final dinner was in Triton’s, and we were all so sad that after 12 nights, this was our final dinner onboard with Faisal, Lito and Maggie.
I forgot to photograph the menu, but it was a version of the old Captain’s Gala menu, with regional inspirations. These were the Alaskan King Crab Legs which were outstanding:
The Marinated Tiger Shrimp (very good):
The Roasted Bering Sea Halibut Filet (very good):
The Oven Baked Lobster Tail (very good):
The dessert menu:
The Chocolate Lava Cake (excellent):
Note that your server puts the ice cream on top at the serving station next to your table, versus in the kitchen where it would be mostly melted before it reached you.
The Raspberry Vanilla Creme Brûlée (didn’t taste):
We had to leave for the Family Talent Show at 7:30, so we had to say a very rushed goodbye to our serving team, which I hated. I wish we had more time to say a proper good-bye. We have liked all of our previous servers, with some being more memorable than others. I would say that Lito and Maggie have been my favorite so far (although I did really like Levy last year on the Panama Canal cruise), and while I have never requested specific servers before, I would consider requesting Lito the next time we are on the Wonder.
We arrived at the talent show just in time.
There were only a few people signed up, so it was a pretty short show. Next, we went to the shops to make one final walk through and decide if we wanted to buy anything else. I can’t remember if we did or not.
At 8:30, we watched Dreams: An Enchanted Classic in the Walt Disney Theater. That had performed it the night before as well, but only once at 7:15 and we were at dinner so we watched it tonight, when they were doing the standard 2 shows.
After the show, I went to pick up my prints in Shutters, which was a madhouse as it usually is on the final night. I got in and out pretty quick.
At 10:30, we went to our final session of Family Karaoke and called it a night. We were so sad that this was our last night, but we had fun plans for the next day so that helped.
