This is a guest trip report written by Carol, who sailed on the most recent 10 night cruise to the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland on the Disney Magic on August 16, 2018. You can start the trip report from the beginning by clicking here.
Day 4: Alesund, Norway
Our third port (three ports in a row – I was getting tired!) brought us to Alesund, Norway. This brought us much further north and to a cooler climate, and the day was gray and raining on and off. Nonetheless, we were excited for our day in another beautiful Norwegian port and this time we were doing a Disney excursion. We had breakfast in Cabanas and met in the Walt Disney Theatre as our tickets directed. Our excursion for the day was Alesund Highlights (AL01). Once we were ready to leave, we were directed off the ship and onto a bus which took us to the Sunmore Museum, which is an outdoor museum which depicts life in a Norwegian seaport town from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. It has more than 50 well-preserved buildings, including a stone church which dates back to 1250 and many replicas of Viking boats. We spent about 90 minutes here, which included a tour by our guide which included many interesting facts about Norwegian seaport towns and fishing life.
This is a building where they built and stored boats:
A house where fishermen stayed while they worked when out of town:
Houses where people changed for church (they would come in boats to church and then have to change to their church clothes and then change back into their boat clothes after church):
The schoolhouse:
The church – rebuilt several times but the original dated back to 1250:
Replica of a Viking boat:
After visiting Sunmore, we reboarded the bus and headed to the top of Mount Aksla. This is a beautiful viewpoint, although we had some rain and wind while we were on the top of it. You can walk to the top up 418 steps, and it was even a pit stop in the popular show Amazing Race during one season where the competitors had to race up the steps to the pit stop at the top! The views were amazing, even in the wind and rain!
See how windy it was at the top!
Beautiful view of the city:

After time at the top, we then took the bus back to the port. We had some extra time, so we walked around the city of Alesund and did some shopping. The city near the port is really cute and by then the weather had improved quite a lot. We got some great souvenirs and I took some pictures around the city.
We then headed back to the ship to give us plenty of time to board before our all aboard time. That night on the ship we saw Tangled: The Musical – which was excellent! After Tangled, we saw Gennady who is a speed painter, and he was just amazing! He created these paintings so fast and some of the time we didn’t even know what it was going to be before he was finished. It was excellent and just so much fun to watch!
Here are the paintings after they were completed:
It was then our night in Animator’s Palate for the “show” when the room starts in black and white and becomes colored as the night goes on. It’s always fun to watch and I love seeing the room and drawings come alive with color around me! It was also formal night, and we were all dressed in our best! Our towel animal for the night was I think a duck, but cool whatever it was! We had a great night and were more than ready for a sea day the next day.
