Guest Trip Report: February 7, 2020 7 Night on the Disney Wonder from New Orleans – Day 5
Today was our day to dock at Castaway Cay.
We love to visit Disney’s private island. This port is one of the most compelling reasons to sail with Disney. We have a cruise in December that is not scheduled to go to this port, and I keep forgetting—it seems so weird. I’ve never sailed on DCL without a scheduled stop here. (One time we docked very late in the day due to high winds, and another time we missed the port altogether due to the weather, though). As we docked, we enjoyed seeing the island from our window
We started in Triton’s for a very healthy breakfast.
We are planning to eat dinner at Palo tonight, so we are eating very lightly today in anticipation of our amazing dinner tonight.
We disembarked and saw some of our favorite sights at the island.
We love the view of the ship just as you disembark at the dock.
Michael’s favorite place on the island is Spring a Leak, which is a splash pad that is perfect for the little ones. Just like Dory’s Reef on board, kids in swim diapers are welcome to use Spring a Leak. We have outgrown diapers, but this is still his favorite place to play on Castaway Cay.
I see many questions about the Castaway Cay 5K from new cruisers. I have done the 5K twice. We didn’t do it this time, but we likely will in the future when Michael can be dropped at Scuttle’s Cove for no additional charge (we’d still have to pay for the nursery to do it this sailing). The main questions I see are the following: ”Can I walk?” and “Is there a time limit?” Yes, you may walk it! There have been walkers every time I’ve been to the island. As far as a time limit, I’m not totally sure, but this clock was still going after two hours, and I think most folks could easily be finished by then.
Like his mom, though, he’s not a huge fan of sand, so we quickly headed back to the splash pad. We enjoyed our morning on the island. I am a melanoma survivor, and Michael has my red hair and fair complexion, so we never stay in the sun too long. We came back on board to eat a very light lunch, and I was surprised to find Cabanas open. We’ve always eaten on the island (we prefer the adult venue—Serenity Bay BBQ), and it never even occurred to us that they might keep Cabanas open for Castaway Cay day lunch. I normally avoid the buffet because I do not like navigating through crowds or fighting for a place to sit, but this was pleasant. Most folks ate on the island, so there were very few of us in Cabanas for lunch. We basically snacked because we still had Palo to come. We dropped Michael off in the nursery after lunch to let him nap and we were off to enjoy Serenity Bay for a while.
After nap time, we found Mardi Gras Goofy!
We got Michael a snack for dinner on the pool deck, dropped him in the nursery, and then we dressed up for our early Palo dinner. We haven’t had Palo dinner in years because we prefer Palo brunch. We wanted to have dinner again, and the verdict is still the same for us. Dinner is great, but brunch is definitely the better of the two experiences. If you can only do one, I highly recommend the brunch! I had the bean soup, the filet, and the famous chocolate souffle. It was all very nice. Harry, our server from South Africa was delightful. We have brunch later this week, and we look forward to his attentive service again for that visit. The entire area of the ship around Palo, Deck 10 Aft, is exquisitely decorated—even the bathrooms are luxurious!
We were treated to an amazing sunset this evening.
After dinner, we picked Michael up from the nursery and headed to the show. I was very excited about our entertainment tonight. I know that Kyle Knight and Mistie are prolific entertainers employed often by DCL, but I’d never had the opportunity to see them. Oh. My. Goodness! This show was incredible. There simply are not enough superlatives to describe this entertainment experience. If they are on your sailing, go see them. You will not be disappointed! After the show, we headed off to bed with our still-full tummies. Tonight, a Sea Turtle welcomed us “home.”
