In case you missed it, I just started a new guest trip report. Deann recently sailed on the July 9, 2018 9 night Alaska itinerary and was kind enough to share her adventures with us. You can start this trip report from the beginning right here.
Day : 8 – Endicott Arm
Monday, July 16
It was 4:30 AM, cloudy with a high of only 50 – another day with rain the face and fog. So, we camped out on Deck 4 to see, as the Captian put it, the “fly by of Endicott Arm”. We learned later that the different cruise companies all want the best time slots to see the glaciers, but sometimes they have to take the morning slot which allows a very short time at the glacier. As it was foggy this morning, we had to enter the fjord more slowly, eating up precious time.
By the time we got to the glacier face, we basically got to see it as the ship slowly turned around and then we went back out. But, what Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm lost in viewing time, made up for it with the magnificent blue ice and waterfalls we saw sailing in and out, even in the fog. Since we didn’t stop at the glacier face, there was no “Glacier Explorer” port adventure off the ship today.
Dawes Glacier through the fog:
This is what it looked like on our cruise last year:
It was a foggy, wet day on the ship – time to stay inside and go to the Gold and Platinum Reception! On cruises longer than 8 days, they have a Gold and Platinum Reception. Since this was our first one we did not know what to expect. We went to the Walt Disney Theatre, and were served drinks. We chose the sparking apple juice with a cherry.
While in the theatre, we were treated to a demonstration of how they change the scenery during the shows and do the backstage work to set up the next scene. They performed the scene as usual, then they did it again with all the curtains and masking up so we could see what goes on behind the scenes. It was very interesting. The Captain then came out and talked about the new ships and where they “might be” going in the future. It looks like there “might be” cruises to Hawaii, Singapore, Tokyo and Australia in our future as the 2021, 2022 and 2023 ships come into the fleet – very exciting! Soon we “might be” able to go around the world on different Disney ships. Wow!
After lunch we went to see the matinee of “Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic” and it was well attended. I like the repeat of the big shows in a matinee slot much better than it playing two evenings in a row.
This was also a night of sudden discoveries. A flash mob dance appeared in the atrium. The characters were in tuxes and tails!
It was semi-formal night and we were in Tiana’s Place for dinner. We loved seeing Chip & Dale in their tuxes. John Charles, a long time Disney entertainer, did a set for the evening show, and it was good as always. Another day gone, and too soon we are nearing the end of our cruise.

Enjoying your trip report Deann. The Alaska cruise is on my bucket list! I hope that the Captain has predicated correctly, as it will be really exciting if DCL “might” cruise to Hawaii, Singapore, Tokyo and Australia (in fact I live in Australia, so it would be great to have some Disney cruises close to home, might be able to go every year instead of every second year!!!)

A down under trip would be on our radar also. Isn’t it wonderful that we can possibly experience each other’s country, or at least a part of it.
