Today was our first port day, in Tortola, and Pirate Night! This turned out to be my favorite day of the cruise!
We woke up around 8 am and headed to Cabanas for breakfast. This time I tried some scrambled eggs and was also unimpressed – they were very runny. Other people in my group also agreed on this and said they’d been this way all week.
After we got ready, we headed off the ship. We were planning a beach day at Cane Garden Bay Beach, a public beach in the area. My mom and mother-in-law didn’t want to spend the day at the beach, so they headed off shopping.
We did not have anything set up, but doing the beach day was very easy. We walked to the end of the port and easily found a shuttle that was large enough for all of us. It was about a 15 minute ride to get to the beach and we got to go up the mountain to see the spectacular views. The driver even stopped so we could get pictures.
He gave us two return time options and let us off at the beach. The total cost for 13 of us round-trip was $160.
I chose Cane Garden Bay Beach because it is public and has facilities and a bar/restaurant area. It is also free of charge. When we arrived, there were still seats and tables with umbrellas available, so we grabbed a couple. The beach itself is beautiful. It is surrounded by nature and the water is a gorgeous turquoise color.
The facilities and restaurant area were nothing special, but they were fine. The size was also good for a family – plenty of room for everyone, but small enough that you could keep an eye on kids. And the water was very calm. We felt very comfortable letting our kids swim in it. The seating area is a little crowded, I’m assuming to allow the servers to reach everyone. And the serving area had chickens running around it!
The weather this day was absolutely perfect. It was warm, but not too hot and the water was the perfect temperature. We all spent most of the day in the water. The littles also spent a lot of time playing on the beach.
At one end of the beach was a bouncy pillow play thing. The cost was $15 per child, so we paid for the three oldest kids to play on it. They had a blast and spent a majority of the day there.
For lunch we ordered cheeseburgers from the restaurant area. We didn’t expect much, but they were phenomenal!
When it was time to leave, we met our shuttle and headed back to the port. Before we got back on the ship, we got our best family photo of the week.
Once we got back and everyone had a chance to shower, my daughter, mom, mother-in-law and I went to see Frozen 2. It had just come out in theatres about two weeks before our cruise and we all waited until we were on the ship to see it. Others in our group got snacks and rested.
And then it was time for pirate night! All 15 of us decided to dress up. We weren’t able to get a group photo, but here’s one of all the kids.
We were back at Royal Court. I again missed recording the bread service, but the appetizer options were Sri Sumbhajee’s vegetable samosa, Angelica’s lime marinated shrimp, deep fried calypso crab cake and Swann’s red and yellow beetroot carpaccio.
I skipped this course. Keith had the shrimp, which he said was OK.
For the soup and salad course, the options were carrot and cilantro soup, chilled mango soup, fennel, orange and quinoa salad and romaine wedge.
None of those sounded appealing to me, so Dipo suggested just a tossed salad, which sounded perfect. Keith chose both soups. He enjoyed them both, but said the carrot soup was his favorite.
For the main course, the main options were Jack’s Treasure-of-the Seas, Cortes’s cilantro marinated Caribbean grouper filet, Tia Dalma’s jerk chicken, Chevalle’s lamb shank and King George’s roasted privateer strip loin.
For some reason, I didn’t photograph my dinner, but Keith had the jerk chicken.
The dessert options were bounty fruit cobbler, bananas in paradise, rum soaked chocolate cake, pirate’s treasure sundae and caramel macadamia nut cheesecake tart.
I had the bananas in paradise and Keith had the sundae – both were good.
After dinner, a few of us made it to Deck 11 for the Pirates in the Caribbean deck party. The performance was good, but definitely not what it used to be. For our first cruise, Captain Jack Sparrow came swinging in on a zipline, which did not happen this time. I also believe it was a little bit shorter than in the past. However, we still enjoyed it.
Of course, the best and most impressive part of the performance is the fireworks display at the end! Disney Cruise Line is still the only cruise line that is able to launch fireworks while out at sea. And the show is seriously impressive – they do not skimp on the fireworks! It is really a cool feeling to be out in the middle of the Caribbean ocean, on a cruise ship, with fireworks going off all around you!
We did not stay for the dance party afterwards, but all went to bed in anticipation of another fun port day – San Juan, Puerto Rico!
