Day 3: At Sea
You can see the daily navigators for this cruise by clicking here.
This was another sea day on the ship. My cousin and his family went to the Character Breakfast, which is another complimentary activity that we booked in advance. They then had their kids go to the Oceaneer Club, so they could spend some time in the adult area of the ship. I was not able to spend much time in that area on this cruise, but did on our last cruise and it is very relaxing!
I started my day with breakfast at Cabanas with my mom and Ryan (my 11-year old son). This was my first breakfast of the cruise, and to be honest it was not very good. I ordered lox and bagels from the counter – the lox was very fatty and the tomato was not fresh. I ended up just eating the bagel, cream cheese and cucumber. Everyone else enjoyed their breakfast.
During breakfast, I was happily eating, thinking it was about 9 am, when my mom mentioned that the time had changed overnight. Even though we had been told this the night before, I’d forgotten and for some reason my phone hadn’t updated to the new time. Ryan had a Sports Simulator reservation at 10 am and he was now already late. He had left breakfast early to run around on Decks 11 and 12, so I went looking for him, but couldn’t find him anywhere. By the time I found him, it was too late and he’d missed most of his time in the Sports Simulator. I felt bad for him because this was something he’d really enjoyed on our previous cruise. But, these things happen, so we all went about our day.
My mom and I decided to go for a walk on the Deck 4 walking track, which we all really enjoy doing. Then, my mother-in-law and I attended one of the DVC presentations on the ship. My husband and I have discussed becoming DVC members in the past and have always come to the conclusion that it’s not right for our family, but I really wanted to hear more about it to make sure I understood it correctly. After the presentation, I felt very comfortable with my understanding of DVC and again made the decision that it would not be right for our family.
I went back to the room after this to check on my daughter Kate, who had been sleeping all morning. If you’ve read my previous reports, you know that Kate had been diagnosed with Influenza B the week prior. She was definitely over the hump when the cruise started, but it looked like she was having a slight relapse on this day (which from what I’ve heard is normal). She ended up sleeping most of the day in her room.
Ryan and my 10-year old niece decided to check out Edge, the tween club. Since Ryan had turned 11 two days prior, he was finally old enough to go in there. My sister-in-law was able to sign a release to allow my niece in as well.
My husband wanted to work out and since he’d had Matthew, our 7-year old son, all morning, it was my turn to hang out with him. We rested for a little bit in the room, then he played on the Captains Wheel on deck 5 and then started the Mid Ship Detective Agency. But about halfway through, we both realized that we were hungry and wanted to eat instead.
I dropped Matthew back at the room (at this point Keith was back from his work out) and headed up to Flo’s Café to bring food back for us. I ordered the chicken and blue cheese burger, which was OK. Matthew just wanted fries and pickles for lunch.
It was now Matthew’s turn in the Sports Simulator. On our way there, we ran into Ryan and Matthew asked if he wanted to join him since he’d missed his time that morning. Although you can only sign one child up at a time for the Sports Simulator, they are very good about allowing multiple kids to go in the area together. This activity is something I highly recommend for kids that enjoy sports. It must be booked in advance and it sells out pretty quickly, so you want to make sure you reserve it as soon as your activity booking window opens up. It’s a little hard to see from my pictures, but it’s a large interactive screen that the kids can basically play sports with. They choose which sport they want, and the correct ball or sports apparatus to use – they then shoot or kick the ball or hit the hockey puck, or whatever sport they’re doing, into the screen.
After such an intense work out, we decided we needed ice cream (I mean, I didn’t do anything, but I still used it as an excuse for ice cream). The flavors this day were banana, strawberry/banana, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and chocolate/vanilla.
The kids decided they wanted to try out the Oceaneer Club, so I took them down there. On the way there, I snapped this super cute picture of them in one of the portholes.
Once a child is 8, you are able to give them check-in/out privileges during the registration process. We felt that our two older kids were responsible enough to handle this, so we gave them permission. Matthew was not old enough to receive the privileges, nor would we have let him, so he needed a parent to check him in and out each time. I was also able to give permission to do the check-in/check-out for Matthew to the other adults in our traveling party, including my daughter, since she was 13. Ryan and my niece preferred the Oceaneer Club to Edge.
After the kids returned, our whole group decided to go see the entertainer Max Winfrey during the early show. He was really amazing! He performed different tricks that included juggling and audience participation. I won’t ruin any of the show, but I was definitely covering my eyes a few times in fear that he would get hurt!
Dinner that night was at Enchanted Garden. Bread service was multigrain and country currant rolls with chick-pea garlic puree. I’m not sure if either of us had this (doubtful), but I didn’t record anything on the bread service this night.
The appetizers were cucumber garden roll, ahi tuna and avocado tower, North Atlantic lobster ravioli and Applewood smoked bacon wild mushroom tart. Here is the menu as shown on the Navigator app:
I chose the ahi tuna and avocado tower, which was excellent.
I was a little nervous ordering it because it came with wasabi dressing and I’m very sensitive to spicy foods, but the wasabi came on the side so it was fine. Keith ordered the lobster ravioli, which he said was very good.
The soup and salad choices were heirloom tomato soup, cream of asparagus soup, spinach and raspberry salad and a romaine wedge.
I chose the spinach and raspberry salad, which was just OK.
Keith had the iceberg wedge and tomato soup, which he said were both very good.
For the main course, the choices were caramelized sea scallops, pan seared sea bass, marjoram scented roast chicken and seared pork tenderloin medallions and slow roasted prime rib.
I chose the prime rib, which was good and Keith had the scallops, which he said were very good.
The dessert choices that night were warm sticky date pudding, chocolate garden torte, orange yogurt cake, chocolate brownie sundae and southern style pecan tarte. We both opted not to have dessert that night.
And, we finally got to celebrate Ryan’s birthday from two days ago! Since he was not feeling well on his actual birthday, and the following day was my niece’s seventh birthday, we hadn’t gotten to celebrate with him yet. Ryan is not a fan of cake, so we ordered him cheesecake and the servers of course sang to him. He was so excited and surprised!
After dinner, I took Matthew to the Christmas party in the lobby. Santa, Mrs. Claus and some other favorite characters make an appearance and it even snows in the lobby! It was a very cute show for little guys. Matthew liked it, but I probably wouldn’t take kids much older than him.
Ryan and I then headed to Deck 11 to watch some funnel vision at night. They were playing Beauty and the Beast, which I’d never seen. But we weren’t there long before Ryan fell asleep! I brought him back to the room and my daughter asked to walk around the ship a little (she had gotten her second wind after a day of sleeping).
We walked down to the atrium, where it looked like some of the cast members were preparing for a presentation involving Star Wars. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance would be released in theatres during our cruise. We were hopeful that we would be able to see the premEAR while on the ship, but nothing had been announced yet. We thought this was a pretty good sign! Unfortunately, they were not allowing photos during this time.
After that, it was time to head to bed! We had our first port day in Tortola the next day, so I wanted to make sure everyone got some sleep!
